who knew?

To Stretch Or Not To Stretch?: Research now suggests that stretching before a workout isn't necessarily a good thing, because it causes the brain to think you're about to tear those muscles, says Reynolds. "When you stretch and hold a pose, the brain thinks you are about to damage yourself and it then sends out nerve impulses that actually tighten the muscles," she explains. "... The result is, you're less ready for activity, not more ready for activity."
Don't Skip The Warm-Up: Science suggests that a very easy warmup — a light jog, for example — may be all that most of us need. "What you want to do when you warm up is warm up the tissues," she says. "You want to get the muscles, the tendons — all of the parts of your body — warm, and the best way to do that is to use those tissues." Reynolds recommends jogging before a run or an intense sports match.
Running's Rewards And Risks: Running reduces the risks of heart disease and diabetes, helps maintain your weight and improves brain health. "There's very good science that running for even 30 minutes or so doubles the number of brain cells in certain portions of the brain related to memory," says Reynolds. "Running is wonderful for the health of your body." But the injury rate among runners, she cautions, is extremely high — with as many as 75 percent of runners getting one injury a year. "So running can be very hard on the body at the same time it's very good for the body," she says.
Humans Were Made For Walking: Walking may be the single best exercise that exists on the planet, Reynolds says. It's low-impact and has a relatively low risk for injury. "Walking appears to be what the human body was built for," she explains. Even 15 minutes will reduce your risk for heart disease and diabetes.

The Difference Between Fitness And Health: Becoming fit and becoming healthier are two different things. "You can become healthy with a much lower amount and a much lower intensity of exercise," says Reynolds. "A nice easy walk will improve your health. If you make it a little ... harder or a little more difficult for you to walk, you will become more fit and you will get more benefits. But even if you just walk lightly, you will be healthier than if you don't do anything."
Hydration Hype: We don't need eight glasses of water a day to stay hydrated. "What we now know is that if you drink to thirst, if you listen to the little voice in your head that says, 'You need water,' you will drink as much as you need," Reynolds says. "You don't need to stay ahead of your thirst. Drink what you want, and you will almost certainly be fine."
The Ultimate Post-Workout Beverage: Use chocolate milk to replenish sugars after an intense workout. Reynolds calls it an "ideal recovery beverage" because it has the right ratio of carbs and proteins to aid your body's recovery process.

i was listening to NPR today on my WALK (woot woot) and this lady was being interviewed on Fresh Air. i was surprised by a lot of this information, and pretty stoked. why? because walking is my favorite form of exercise (i gave up running a long time ago, and did happen to get a stress fracture), i don't drink anywhere near 8 glasses of water a day, and our fridge is regularly stocked with chocolate milk. she also talked about squats and said that they are one of the best exercises we can do- a few reasons being that they build some of the biggest muscles in the body which means more calorie-burning, and that when we are older strong legs will come in handy in a lot of different ways. i think i am going to start doing them regularly, along with the plank- which is also touted as being a great exercise for the entire body. (bret has also started doing push-ups and the plank... now if we can just get our butts to go mountain biking a few times a week we will pretty much be completely awesome.) LOL.
thanks Gretchen Stewart for the enlightenment.

because they're awesome.

priceless.

 (awesome drawings by bret)

i love the fact that noah's head is about five times bigger
than luke's whole body- which i am holding.
i realize that this font is way too small to read, but it's either this or
the one above- which is too big for an afterthought. they did away with the
one between these two sizes- something i am very angry about. if you can
read this, props. i don't even think i can.

i needed this today.

The challenges you face, the growth experiences you encounter, are intended to be temporary scenes played out on the stage of a life of continuing peace and happiness. Sadness, heartache, and disappointments are events in life. It is not intended that they be the substance of life. I do not minimize how hard some of theses events can be. when the lesson you are to learn is very important, trials can extend over a long period of time, but they should not be allowed to become the confining focus of everything you do... That perspective keeps challenges confined to their proper place--stepping-stones to further growth and attainment.

flat stanley

this is what happens when you send Flat Staney to uncle
Jeff- the photographer. i get such a kick out of these.

see you later Flat Stanley. thanks for hanging with us.

(in case you're not familiar with Flat Staney, it is a children's book that has also become an activity that many teachers do in their classrooms. the children make a paper version of Flat Staney and then choose someone to send him to. that person then takes him around to various places where they live and get pictures with him. Jeff improvised on the idea a little.)

Peace can exist ony in the present moment. It is ridiculous to say "Wait until I finish this, then I will be free to live in peace." What is "this"? A diploma, a job, a house, the payment of a debt? If you think that way, peace will never come. There is always another "this" that will follow the present one. If you are not living in peace at this moment, you will never be able to. If you truly want to be at peace, you must be at peace right now. Otherwise, there is only "the hope of peace some day.""

Random Thoughts for the Day

(bret forwarded me this email once and i posted it on fb...i like it so much that i'm sharing it on here as well.)

1. I think part of a best friend's job should be to immediately clear your computer history if you die.

2. Nothing sucks more than that moment during an argument when you realize you're wrong.

3. I totally take back all those times I didn't want to nap when I was younger.

4. There is great need for a sarcasm font.

5. How are you supposed to fold a fitted sheet?

6. Was learning cursive really necessary?

7. Map Quest really needs to start their directions on #5. I'm pretty sure I know how to get out of my neighborhood.

8. Obituaries would be a lot more interesting if they told you how the person died.

9. I can't remember the last time I wasn't at least kind of tired.

10. Bad decisions make good stories.

11. You never know when it will strike, but there comes a moment at work when you know that you just aren't going to do anything productive for the rest of the day.

12. Can we all just agree to ignore whatever comes after Blue Ray? I don't want to have to restart my collection...again.

13. I'm always slightly terrified when I exit out of Word and it asks me if I want to save any changes to my ten-page research paper that I swear I did not make any changes to.

14. "Do not machine wash or tumble dry" means I will never wash this -- ever.

15. I hate when I just miss a call by the last ring (Hello? Hello? Damn it!), but when I immediately call back, it rings nine times and goes to voicemail. What'd you do after I didn't answer? Drop the phone and run away?

16. I hate leaving my house confident and looking good and then not seeing anyone of importance the entire day. What a waste.

17. I keep some people's phone numbers in my phone just so I know not to answer when they call.

19. I think the freezer deserves a light as well.

20. I disagree with Kay Jewelers. I would bet on any given Friday or Saturday night more kisses begin with Miller Lites than Kay.

the fatties lately

noah (6) LOVES the natural history museum and chess, and is probably smarter than me.

noah: (on the way to the natural history museum) "Guys- if there was a pizza museum i'd SO be there."

luke (4) will out of the blue say 'mommy i love you' and loves to snuggle with me when i'm in bed.

noah's favorite snack/meal is ritz crackers with melted cheese on top sandwiched with another ritz cracker with peanut butter. (he came up with it himself...gotta hand it to him for incorporating a little protein into his diet.)

luke lives and breathes for treats... i.e. anything with sugar.

noah asks for me to put them to bed every night instead of dad. it melts my heart every time.

luke cries whenever noah cries.

they go in phases as far as what they are into...usually the rotation involves blocks/legos; cowboy dress-up; sword fighting; playing with their aircraft carrier, chevron cars, or insanely huge collection of matchbox cars/trucks/other vehicles.

the other day when they were playing with their chevron cars, i overheard noah (the police car) ask luke if he was drunk.

luke loves to say 'butt'. example: me- "lukey i love you." him- "i love your butt."

noah is starting to enjoy reading more; however trying to get him to do his homework is a nightmare.

luke's diet consists of: bagels with cream cheese, honey nut cheerios, vanilla milk, string cheese, and eggos. (and any treat.) my only consolation is that noah used to be this picky too but has branched out in his later years.

noah's favorite tv shows are the Simpsons and Arthur. (yes- i feel sort of guilty about the first one.)

luke is great at entertaining himself with his various toy vehicles and makes the coolest sound effects ever.

noah is finally starting to grasp that the word is 'nevermind', not 'remembermind'.

i'm glad i have kids that are so sweet, funny & entertaining.
it sort of makes up for all the times they drive me insane.
